Laylan 2 Camp Celebrates New School Year

Tuesday October 23 marked the beginning of a new school year in Laylan 2 Camp.

To celebrate the occasion, Laylan 2 Camp Management, together with students and other camp residents, gathered at the camp social center to motivate and educate the students about the importance of school and encourage them to build a beautiful and better future.

The celebration included several activities, including two speeches by Camp Management and the Representative of Laylan primary school. Camp Management stressed the importance of education and encouraged students not to drop out of school, and the primary school representative strove to motivate students’ parents to pay more attention to their children’s general hygiene. Moreover, they guided parents in urging their children’s continuous study.

There were also theatrical and talent performances throughout the celebration. One group of students performed a skit to show the unknown future of students who leave school, and a group of seven girls, trained by a member of the Women’s Committee, performed a song entitled “Our School.” One talented boy also performed a ball balancing trick on one finger.

In addition to these activities, the school director and camp field officer distributed awards to the celebration’s participants, and students released balloons into the air representing their wishes. In all, 150 internally displaced persons (IDPs), a team from Nazrawa Camp, and a number of organizations like the NRC, IRC and Tear fund attended the hour-long event.

This celebration was held as part of IRD/Blumont’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management/Conflict Resolution and Resilience Building (CCCM/C2RB) programs. CCCM provides camp management in four camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq, including accommodation and community mobilization activities. C2RB improves the lives of individuals in Iraq by identifying and implementing solutions to mitigate violence and conflict among IDPs and host communities. They are both funded by UNHCR.
