Za’atari Camp Celebrates Mother’s Day

Groups across Za’atari Camp celebrated Mother’s Day on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 with performances, games, handicraft bazaars and hand-made cards, honoring the women and mothers throughout the camp.

Blumont/IRD’s Community Engagement, Sports and Recreation (CESR) team celebrated Mother’s Day by optimizing its sub-component synergies and collaborative spirit to plan for and conduct a wide array of engaging activities to make a special day even more special for the mothers across the camp.

A fun, high-energy event was conducted in Blumont/IRD’s community center 9, in which 60 girls from Blumont/IRD’s football teams as well as their mothers participated alongside 11 football coaches and five psychosocial support staff. Event participants enjoyed a positive atmosphere as they watched a performance from a Syrian Arada music group and played in six tele match games. The CESR team distributed gifts to all participants at the conclusion of the event.

Blumont/IRD’s transferrable skills program coaches also contributed to the festivities by making the beauty salon and tailoring services available to mothers in the community. The beauty salon in District 2 (D2) and D6 held an open day for 16 mothers from the community to get new haircuts, while the tailoring caravans in D2, D6, D9 and D10 received and mended clothes for 64 women.

The Women’s Committee and Syria Tomorrow members took part in the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Mother’s Day celebration. During the event’s bazaar, the women showcased their handmade products, such as soaps, perfume and wool products. They also made and offered sweets and coffee to attendees, after which they engaged in a dynamic question and answer (Q&A) session with the audience. Syria Tomorrow committee members organized and held a play for mothers called “She is my Mother.”

Finally, the These Inspiring Girls Enjoy Reading (TIGER) girls had prepared special, hand-written cards for their mothers and, as part of the celebration, had the chance to present these cards to their mothers. A total of 41 mothers received hand-written cards and shared special and heart-warming moments with their daughters.
